Beneath that gorgon exterior, Medusa was still a giving being.įor example, if Medusa hadn’t been slain, the birth of Pegasus might never have happened. ![]() Even death doesn’t staunch Medusa’s core spirit of generosity. Okay, so Medusa’s plight was rather tragic. Surprisingly, gorgon meaning deals with generosity because Medusa kept on giving after her murder. But the irony is, Medusa became quite a badass while living as a gorgon and even after her death. Sometimes nice girls just can’t catch a break. She was said to be generous, thoughtful, bright and beautiful. The big crime here is that before Medusa’s gorgon days, she was quite a sweet girl. Enraged and insulted (not to mention quick to judge), Athena smote Medusa with the curse that made her into the so-called monster we see today. It was a slap in Athena’s face to see the two together within her temple of virginal purity. Instead, Athena assumed Poseidon and Medusa laid together in mutual consent, which was certainly not the case. Athena witnessed the tail end of the violation – not knowing Medusa was a victim. Poseidon eventually wore down Medusa, and forced himself upon her. As a last resort, she runs to Athena’s temple (who happened to be the virgin goddess who held purity in the highest regard). Wanting to keep her virginity, Medusa resists Poseidon as best she can. As a matter of fact, her name Medusa means ‘to protect’ – and legend states she was quite protective of her purity. Unable to contain his libido in the presence of such loveliness, Poseidon makes a move on Medusa. Picture it, ancient Greece, a lusty Poseidon lays eyes on the ravishing Medusa. That is, until one day Athena turned her into a gorgon. I mean, the term gorgon in Greek translates to ‘dreadful’ or ‘beastly.’ But in my defense, I happened to have some background history on gorgon meaning and Medusa before seeing the movie.ĭid you know Medusa was once a breathtaking, bombshell of a woman? Yep, her beauty was legendary. This meaning can be traced back through Greek mythology and the story of the Greek Gorgon Medusa.Maybe that makes me a sicko. The head of Medusa which dominates the center of the symbol represents protection and resilience. In ancient Rome, Sicily produced large quantities of corn and was deemed the granary of empire. The leafy flourishes that sit between the legs represent the agricultural richness of the land in Sicily. The legs are specifically those belonging to a woman because they serve as a metaphor for the sensual, breathtaking beauty of the coastal beaches of Sicily. It is often said that the three legs symbolize the three capes of Sicily: Peloro, Passero and Lilibeo which form the triangular perimeter of Sicily. The Trinacria contains three bent legs which come together forming a triangle. ![]() The word Trinacria translates to triangle or three pointed which connotes the triangular shape of Sicily. Prior to being called Sicily the island was actually called Trinacria in ancient Greek times. ![]() It was found engraved on Syracusan coins from the 4th century B.C. However the Trinacria symbol had existed long before. It was then that the Trinacria was recognized around the world as an emblem of Sicily. The Sicilian flag was first established in 1943 by Italian politician Andrea Finnochiaro Aprile who led a Sicilian independence movement during World War II.
